Discrimination legislation

In July 2020, the States of Deliberation agreed policy proposals for the introduction of a new multi-ground Discrimination Ordinance. This legislation will make it unlawful for employers and service providers to discriminate against a person on the grounds of race, disability, carer status, sexual orientation or religious belief in employment, when providing goods, services, education and accommodation and in the membership of clubs and associations.

The discrimination legislation will come into force on 1 October 2023

Why is discrimination legislation needed?

Discrimination legislation promotes and protects people's right to equality of status, opportunity, treatment and non-discrimination on the basis of various 'grounds of protection' specified in the legislation.

Currently Guernsey only has legislation to protect people from discrimination in employment. It is anticipated that the new Ordinance will come into force during 2023 which will widen the grounds of protection.

Why is there training?

The Committee for Employment & Social Security is keen to ensure that a wide range of training options are available to ensure that employers and service providers (including providers of goods and services, accommodation, education and clubs and associations) have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the requirements of the new legislation at an appropriate level, before it comes into force.
